As I enter my final few months as Miss Massachusetts, 21 young women from around the Commonwealth are busy practicing their talents, hitting the gym, reading up on the news----and preparing to take my job. I've invited each contestant to be a "guest writer" on my blog and contribute a piece that demonstrates her unique personality, interests and experiences. Over the next several weeks, members of the Miss Massachusetts Class of 2017 will be featured in this series as we "Countdown to the Crown". This week's featured contestant is Lyndsey Littlefield, Miss South Coast 2017!
Hi! My name is Lyndsey Littlefield, and I am the current Miss South Coast 2017.
I began competing in pageants when I was in my sophomore year of high school. My story didn't start out with the goal of winning, or competing in general. At the time I was dancing professionally and recreationally, while obtaining my Dental Assistant license. Miss Jen Thomas, my recreational tap teacher, had come to the conclusion, and suggested me for the teen program of the Miss America organization due to my love of community volunteerism. When I was first approached with the idea of pageantry I laughed. I remember telling my mom "I walk in pointe shoes, not high heels...". After a few weeks of convincing from my teacher, mother, and the reining Miss Taunton of the time, I decided to compete to showcase my talent.
Fast forward to today, you can see it was more than the talent phase of competition that got me hooked on the Miss America Organization. The friendships gained and positive atmosphere in the organization truly made every appearance and pageant filled with laughs and smiles. I love the organizations focus on giving back to the community and supporting healthy lifestyles. As a former professional dancer, I had witnessed many unhealthy lifestyles of some company members, and based my platform of the sole concept of confidence and healthy living. I created a personal platform of loving who you are and standing firm on what you believe! Girls Inc of Taunton was the perfect fit to dedicate my year to! Working with kids now, teaching dance classes, and confidence building activities we are working to eliminate body idealistic, and photoshop, and be strong, smart, and bold. Living by my platform, I stand bold in my words by not photoshopping pictures, or headshots. But the Miss America Organization is focused on much more than our personal platforms.
I am currently a student at Bridgewater State University, with a major in Biology with a concentration in pre-dental and a triple minor (in Physics, Dance, and Chemistry). I am currently a certified Dental Assistant, and working on becoming a Dentist! School and work aside, I still find time to dance, and do what I love. I am now apart of the Bridgewater State's Dance Company here on campus, as well as teach dance at Erin Rae's School of Dance in Westport. In my spare time you can find me in the studio dancing, in the lab studying or training at Red Seal Martial Arts Co. Due to my widespread of interests my nickname since Middle School has been "the dancing dentist". Years later I still find my goals to fit my Eighth grade nickname.
I look back often of my first pageant and giggle at the outcome. If not competed, I would had never had the courage or support to step out of my dancing comfort zone, and have the opportunity to represent this region of Massachusetts. I am proud to say I am now a dancer, a motorcyclist, a dental student candidate, a martial artist, a Spartan race champion, and Miss South Coast!
